{"id":89237,"date":"2024-07-17T15:50:03","date_gmt":"2024-07-17T15:50:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.stress.org\/?post_type=news&#038;p=89237"},"modified":"2024-07-08T15:57:52","modified_gmt":"2024-07-08T15:57:52","slug":"hr-tops-list-of-stress-smoker-professions","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.stress.org\/news\/hr-tops-list-of-stress-smoker-professions\/","title":{"rendered":"HR tops list of stress-smoker professions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mt-3 text-lg leading-8 text-default mb-6\">HR professionals are the most likely of all working smokers to smoke because they are stressed, rather than addiction or any other reason, according to new research.<\/p>\n<div class=\"prose\">\n<p>More than eight in 10 (83%) HR professionals who smoke reported they smoke more when they are stressed, above those who work in property (77%), law enforcement (75%), management (75%) and social care (72%), a survey by nicotine retailer Haypp showed.<\/p>\n<p>Rachael Mackenzie, director at wellbeing and performance consultancy Workathlete, told\u00a0<em>HR\u00a0<\/em>magazine that lack of control at work, often as a result of\u00a0<a title=\" Work is getting more intense, say over half of employees \" href=\"https:\/\/www.hrmagazine.co.uk\/articles\/work-is-getting-more-intense-say-over-half-of-employees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high workloads,<\/a>\u00a0can be a particular stressor.<\/p>\n<p>She said: \u201cHR professionals often spend so much time and energy ensuring the wellbeing of their employees, that they can\u00a0<a title=\"HR's mental health: Letting people in is hard but necessary\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hrmagazine.co.uk\/articles\/hrs-mental-health-letting-people-in-is-hard-but-necessary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">neglect focusing on their own health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s often when workloads appear to be out of hand that people most often reach for their unhealthy coping mechanisms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Idris Arshad, head of people at charity Asthma &amp; Lung UK said that dealing with stress ultimately needed to come on a\u00a0<a title=\"How HR can reap the wellbeing dividend in 2023\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hrmagazine.co.uk\/articles\/how-hr-can-reap-the-wellbeing-dividend-in-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">case-by-case, personal level<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to\u00a0<em>HR\u00a0<\/em>magazine, he said: \u201cThere are many ways for HR to deal with stress, but it is all about the individual.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are all different in how we understand, cope with, and recover from stress. Ultimately, HR needs to follow the advice it dishes out to others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mackenzie added: \u201cStress coaching that focuses on understanding the individual can help workers shift away from a reliance on\u00a0<a title=\"UK's approach to resilience and wellbeing not fit for purpose, say Lords\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hrmagazine.co.uk\/articles\/uks-approach-to-resilience-and-wellbeing-not-fit-for-purpose-say-lords\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unhealthy coping mechanisms<\/a>\u00a0such as smoking, to adopting healthier alternatives.
