But if you grumble too much, how does it affect coworkers and how are you viewed by them? A new phenomenon called \u201cstress bragging\u201d\u2014the constant complaining about stress levels, particularly to your peers at work\u2014has a scientific backing in the research literature, plus, it has become a trendy buzzword in the workplace.<\/p>\n<p>A new study recently published in<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/peps.12645\" href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/peps.12645\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/peps.12645\" aria-label=\"Personnel Psychology\">\u00a0<em data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/peps.12645\">Personnel Psychology<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and going viral on TikTok shows the negative effects, not just from the stress itself but as a result of workers whining about being stressed out. In March of this year, the University of Georgia Terry College of Business found that \u201cstress bragging\u201d negatively affects \u201cstress braggarts\u201d\u2014those who constantly whine about their stress level\u2014as well as the coworkers to whom they complain:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Stress braggarts are perceived as less competent by colleagues.<\/li>\n<li>Stress braggarts are viewed as less likable by coworkers.<\/li>\n<li>Coworkers of stress braggarts also suffer by experiencing higher levels of burnout due to stress spillover effects.<\/li>\n<li>Coworkers are less likely to help a stress braggart.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\u201cIn an office or corporate environment, \u201cstress bragging\u201d may come across as irritating to coworkers,\u201d according to Josh Millet, CEO of\u00a0<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.criteriacorp.com\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.criteriacorp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.criteriacorp.com\/\" aria-label=\"Criteria\">Criteria<\/a>\u2014especially when everyone is stressed. \u201cWhile it\u2019s one thing to confide in HR personnel or close managers about how much you\u2019ve got on your plate, it may be an issue worth addressing if you\u2019re constantly talking about how stressed you are at work,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed color-accent bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">Why \u2018Stress Bragging\u2019 Backfires At Work<\/h2>\n<p><a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.terry.uga.edu\/stress-bragging-backfires-at-work\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.terry.uga.edu\/stress-bragging-backfires-at-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.terry.uga.edu\/stress-bragging-backfires-at-work\/\" aria-label=\"Referring to \u201cstress bragging,\">Referring to \u201cstress bragging,<\/a>\u201d Jessica Rodell, lead author of the study and professor of management at the University of Georgia\u2019s Terry College of Business, explained, \u201cThis is a behavior we\u2019ve all seen, and we all might be guilty of at some point. When I was wondering about why people do this, I thought maybe we are talking about our stress because we want to prove we\u2019re good enough. We found out that often backfires.\u201d She adds, \u201cPeople are harming themselves by doing this thing they think is going to make them look better to their colleagues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Millet relayed to me by email that \u201cstress bragging\u201d isn\u2019t a badge of honor, and through the lens of coworkers, being outspoken about stress translates into incompetence. \u201cWorkplace teams usually have a mix of different personality types\u2014which can either play to their advantage or in this case, work against it,\u201d he says. \u201cIf someone who is very outspoken talks non-stop about how stressed they are to someone who is more on the introverted side, the signals may get crossed, and the complaints may sound more like a brag.
