Yet for all the joy and celebration, exonerees may\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">confront deep and emotional mental health struggles stemming from incarceration<\/span><span class=\"s1\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Having spent 18 years behind bars for a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/innocenceproject.org\/rodney-roberts-talks-pleading-guilty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s3\">crime I didn\u2019t commit<\/span><\/a>, I know firsthand the toll a wrongful conviction can take on one\u2019s mental well-being. Wrongful convictions shatter lives, leaving scars that aren\u2019t always visible. Get active.<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s common knowledge that regular exercise, like daily walks or workouts, is good for our physical health, but regular\u00a0<a class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/stress-management\/in-depth\/exercise-and-stress\/art-20044469\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s2\">body movement is essential<\/span><\/a>\u00a0for reducing stress that could lead to\u00a0<a class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/depression\/features\/stress-depression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s2\">depression<\/span><\/a>. These activities provide a space for release, allowing us to channel our energy positively.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I engage in physical activities like bike-riding and Tai Chi to not only promote my physical health but also nurture my mental well-being. Similarly, Innocence Project client\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/innocenceproject.org\/basketball-was-his-escape-during-his-wrongful-conviction-now-norberto-peets-is-free-at-last\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s2\">Norberto Peets<\/span><\/a>, who was wrongly incarcerated for 26 years, has shared how basketball served as an outlet to channel stressful energy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIn Sing Sing Prison, I played basketball all day, and it helped me stay in good shape, but, in that moment when I was playing basketball, it took a lot of stress away from me,\u201d he explained after his release in 2023. \u201cThat was the only time I felt like I was a little free and not so in my mind about all the stuff I was dealing with.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row justify-content-lg-center\">\n<div class=\"col-12 col-md-12 col-lg news-side-col\">\n<div class=\"row flex-lg-column\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"block-news-richtext-2block_4e9d9a6e58807e35056e73b59f42f77e\" class=\"block-news-richtext-2\">\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div class=\"row justify-content-lg-center\">\n<div class=\"col-12 col-md-10 col-lg  richtext main-col\">\n<div class=\"side-image rightimage\">\n<figure><picture><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/innocenceproject.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/marvin-anderson-garden.jpg\" alt=\"Marvin Anderson on his front lawn at his home in Virginia. Connect with nature.\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Gardening offers a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/innocenceproject.org\/how-horticulturist-and-exoneree-tyrone-day-has-transformed-dallas-food-deserts-into-thriving-community-gardens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s2\">sense of purpose<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and tranquility. Tending to plants, nurturing their growth, and witnessing the beauty of the natural world can be profoundly healing, providing a grounding presence amidst the chaos of post-exoneration life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/innocenceproject.org\/earth-day-gardening-tips-exonerated-marvin-anderson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marvin Anderson<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\">, an exoneree and a member of the Innocence Project\u2019s board of directors, began cultivating plants at an early age, helping out on his family\u2019s farm.
