And yet, more than a third of 1,100+ US workers who responded to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conference-board.org\/press\/mental-healthor-worsens-US-workers\">Conference Board survey<\/a>\u00a0in May reported that their mental health had worsened in the previous six months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-5a46198a-12 ggMJgB\">HR leaders have a strategic role in helping employees combat mental health-related issues, and there\u2019s no need to reinvent the wheel\u2014there are resources already out there to help workers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-5a46198a-12 ggMJgB\"><strong>Department of Labor.\u00a0<\/strong>Recently, the DOL launched an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/general\/mental-health-at-work?_ga\">online resource<\/a>\u00a0to help employers support their employees\u2019 mental health. The website includes guides to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/find-support\/how-to-pay-for-treatment\/know-what-your-insurance-covers\">insurance-covered treatments<\/a>, including for substance abuse; hotlines to call during\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/988lifeline.org\/\">an immediate crisis<\/a>; and information on employees\u2019\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/general\/mental-health-at-work#resources-for-workers\">legal rights<\/a>\u00a0to mental health resources.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-5a46198a-12 ggMJgB\">\u201cWork is about more than wages. It\u2019s also about a sense of purpose, meaning and belonging. I\u2019m committed to creating an inclusive workplace culture, not only within the department\u2019s already diverse workforce, but in the nation\u2019s workforce as well,\u201d Julie A. Su, acting secretary of labor, said in a recent post on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.dol.gov\/2023\/07\/27\/promoting-mental-health-friendly-workplaces-for-everyone\">the DOL website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-5a46198a-12 ggMJgB\"><strong>Assessment and calculators.\u00a0<\/strong>The American Psychiatric Association\u2019s Center for Workplace Mental Health offers a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/workplacementalhealth.org\/making-the-business-case\/depression-calculator\/\">depression calculator<\/a>\u00a0that employers can use to better understand how much depression might be costing their org.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-5a46198a-12 ggMJgB\">HR pros can also conduct employee surveys. The Center for Health Solutions of the Institute for Clinical Research and Health Policy Studies at Tufts Medical Center offers one that can help assess what\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuftsmedicalcenter.org\/research-clinical-trials\/institutes-centers-labs\/center-for-health-solutions\/available-questionnaires\">limiting employees<\/a>, while <a href=\"http:\/\/Stress.org\"><strong>the American Institute of Stress<\/strong><\/a> offers a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stress.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/The-Workplace-Stress-Scale.pdf\">workplace stress scale<\/a>\u00a0that ranks employees\u2019 stress from \u201cchilled out and relatively calm\u201d to \u201cstress level is potentially dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-5a46198a-12 ggMJgB\"><strong>Stay in the know<\/strong>. HR pros can keep current by following mental health-related news from organizations like the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mentalhealth\/index.htm\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ama-assn.org\/topics\/mental-health\">American Medical Association<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kffhealthnews.org\/topics\/mental-health\/\">KFF Health News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-5a46198a-12 ggMJgB\">No matter how informed HR reps may be, it can still be hard to know how to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hr-brew.com\/stories\/2023\/08\/18\/how-modern-health-can-help-hr-leaders-foster-a-mentally-healthy-workforce\">talk with employees<\/a>\u00a0about mental health.
