diagnoses like PTSD.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"video__ratio-enforcer\">\n<div class=\"video__ratio-enforced\">\n<div class=\"video__inner\">\n<div class=\"video__player-container\">\n<div id=\"video-145baed6-ebc7-41a9-93fc-d882d070c18a\" class=\"video__player amp-html5 amp-player amp-desktop amp-autoplay amp-active amp-ready amp-vod amp-medium-video amp-controls-none\" data-amp=\"\">\n<div class=\"amp-video amp-layer\">\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>This is why, a former Atlanta police officer, and disabled Marine veteran has created <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stress.org\/ptsd-and-scuba-diving\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a nonprofit\u00a0<\/a>to support those with PTSD returning from war.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_ad\">Service members are dying by suicide at a rate four times higher than in combat, according to the United Service Organizations.<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>&#8220;You get in your own head, and it&#8217;s like, I don&#8217;t like how I feel on the surface,&#8221; Service-Connected Disabled Veteran and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.deepbluedivetherapy.org\/about#:~:text=Meet%20Our%20Founder&amp;text=Larry%20Wilson%20is%20a%20Service,during%20Operations%20Desert%20Shield%2FStorm.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Deep Blue Dive Therapy Founder<\/a>\u00a0Larry Wilson said. &#8220;And a lot of people I find feel that way, but the moment you crack the waves, and you crack the seal, it&#8217;s a different world; now you can see because your eyes are open.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>He had already seen a whole lot when he started the nonprofit.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.deepbluedivetherapy.org\/about#:~:text=Meet%20Our%20Founder&amp;text=Larry%20Wilson%20is%20a%20Service,during%20Operations%20Desert%20Shield%2FStorm.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wilson served<\/a>\u00a0over a decade as a P.O.S.T. It&#8217;s a weird thing, I fell into that,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>To pull himself out, he had to go in.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>&#8220;Once you get underneath, literally, they think I am just a big ugly fish. And they don&#8217;t care,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>The water washing away the rigid demands of who they are supposed to be.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>&#8220;You become part of the world around you. And you don&#8217;t have all the noise and the things that are distracting and stressful,&#8221; Georgia Aquarium Salute to Veterans Program Manager Jason Bush said. &#8220;You have to be in the moment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>Many of the divers have lost friends in arms to suicide.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>&#8220;Much like many of us that struggle with the invisible wounds of war, it&#8217;s much like leaving all of that on the surface. And not being bound by the things you struggle with every day. The anxiety, the PTSD, the depression,&#8221; Bush said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_ad\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/stress.org\"><strong>The American Institute of Stress<\/strong><\/a> is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stress.org\/ptsd-and-scuba-diving\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">studying the benefits of scuba diving<\/a>\u00a0for PTSD. Wilson said diving can save lives.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>&#8220;Pushing yourself to find ways to help yourself. Knowing there is a problem and getting deeper.
