Stress impacts the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/the_digestion_process_organs_and_functions\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\">digestive system<\/a>\u00a0through the nervous system, and can affect food movement and the gut&#8217;s bacterial balance. Stress can also cause people to eat poorly, smoke and\/or drink too much\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/alcohol_metabolism\/article.htm\" rel=\"webmdlt\">alcohol<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/caffeine\/article.htm\" rel=\"sub\">caffeine<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 all habits that can trigger\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/gastritis\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\">stomach pain<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Outside the brain, the gut has the greatest area of nerves. This component of the autonomic nervous system \u2014 known as the enteric nervous system \u2014 is sometimes referred to as the \u201csecond brain.\u201d According to Harvard Health, \u201cneurons lining the digestive tract signal muscle cells to initiate a series of contractions that propel food farther along, breaking it down into nutrients and waste.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The enteric nervous system communicates with the central nervous system and is known as the \u201cbrain-gut axis.\u201d This connection explains why stress may cause digestive problems.<\/p>\n<p>According to the American Psychological Association, stress may increase the risk for or exacerbate symptoms of the following gut diseases or dysfunction:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/why_am_i_so_bloated\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\">Bloating<\/a>, burping,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/intestinal_gas_belching_bloating_flatulence\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\">gas<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/heartburn_reflux\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\">Heartburn<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/gastroesophageal_reflux_disease_gerd\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\">acid reflux<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/gastroesophageal_reflux_disease_gerd\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\">gastroesophageal reflux disease<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/gastroesophageal_reflux_disease_gerd\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\">GERD<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/nausea_and_vomiting\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\">Nausea<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/nausea_and_vomiting\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\">vomiting<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/diarrhea\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\">Diarrhea<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/constipation\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\">Constipation<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Ulcers<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/inflammatory_bowel_disease_intestinal_problems\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\">Inflammatory bowel disease<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/irritable_bowel_syndrome_ibs\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\">irritable bowel syndrome<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/why_am_i_so_bloated\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\">Bloating<\/a>, burping,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/intestinal_gas_belching_bloating_flatulence\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\">gas<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Stress can contribute to bloating, burping or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/intestinal_gas_belching_bloating_flatulence\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\">gassiness<\/a>\u00a0by making swallowing foods difficult or increasing swallowed air, per the American Psychological Association.<\/p>\n<p>It can also slow the digestive process, allowing gut bacteria to create gas. For treatment,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/whats_gastroenterologist\/article.htm\" rel=\"webmdlt\">gastroenterologist<\/a>\u00a0Dr. Roshini Rajapaksa of NYU Langone Health in New York City recommends\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/exercise\/article.htm\" rel=\"sub\">exercise<\/a>: \u201c<a class=\"quizlink\" title=\"Learning Quiz\" href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/exercise_and_fitness_quiz\/quiz.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener quiz\">Exercise<\/a>\u00a0actually helps your colon start moving and it moves that gas along, so it&#8217;s not going to stay in your system,\u201d she said recently. She also suggested to avoid chewing gum, using straws or drinking carbonated\u00a0<a class=\"quizlink\" title=\"Learning Quiz\" href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/drinks_and_beverages_quiz\/quiz.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener quiz\">beverages<\/a>, to keep you from swallowing extra air.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/heartburn_reflux\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\">Heartburn<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/gastroesophageal_reflux_disease_gerd\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\">acid reflux<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a class=\"quizlink\" title=\"Learning Quiz\" href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/gerd_gastroesophageal_reflux_disease_quiz\/quiz.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener quiz\">GERD<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Emotional stress can increase stomach acid production leading to heartburn and acid reflux, according to Harvard Health. It can also aggravate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/gastroesophageal_reflux_disease_gerd\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\">GERD<\/a>, a disorder where acid rises up from the stomach into the\u00a0<a class=\"imglink\" title=\"Medical Image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/image-collection\/esophagus_picture\/picture.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"img noopener\">esophagus<\/a>. How to counteract that? Tramontana recommends\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/exercise\/article.htm\" rel=\"sub\">exercise<\/a>, meditation and a healthy\u00a0<a class=\"quizlink\" title=\"Learning Quiz\" href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/diet_and_nutrition_quiz\/quiz.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener quiz\">diet<\/a>, with frequent smaller meals. Another option is to drink peppermint tea, which is known to settle the stomach.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a class=\"slidelink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/diarrhea_digestive_problem_food_pictures_slideshow\/article.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener slide\" data-title=\"Educational Slideshow\">Diarrhea<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Can stress cause\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/diarrhea\/symptoms.htm\" rel=\"sym\">diarrhea<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Stress] hormones affect the body, including the gut, to shift swiftly into stress mode,\u201d gastroenterologist Dr. Christine Lee said recently in a Cleveland Clinic article. Adrenal glands release hormones like cortisol, serotonin and adrenaline. \u201cThere are more serotonin receptors in the intestinal tract than in the brain\u2026 [Serotonin] can make your stomach turn. It stimulates the\u00a0<a class=\"imglink\" title=\"Medical Image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/image-collection\/intestines_picture\/picture.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"img noopener\">intestines<\/a>, creating waves of contractions in the colon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can cause a constellation of symptoms of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/nausea\/symptoms.htm\" rel=\"sym\">nausea<\/a>, gas, bloating and crampy\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/abdominal_pain\/symptoms.htm\" rel=\"sym\">abdominal pains<\/a>,\u201d Lee explained, noting that the release of stress causes the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/diarrhea\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\">diarrhea<\/a>. \u201cEverything relaxes, and what was on hold is released,&#8221; she said. &#8220;This counter-response can cause symptoms of nausea,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/pain_management\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\">pain<\/a>, flushing,\u00a0<a class=\"slidelink\" title=\"Educational Slideshow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/diarrhea_digestive_problem_food_pictures_slideshow\/article.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener slide\">diarrhea<\/a>\u00a0or even\u00a0<a class=\"slidelink\" title=\"Educational Slideshow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/hyperhidrosis_sweating_pictures_slideshow\/article.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener slide\">sweating<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Treatment suggestions include mindful eating \u2014 a practice that involves slowing down and savoring each bite of food \u2014 and avoiding stressful environments when eating, like eating while driving.
