Small amounts of stress can motivate you to face daily challenges. But when stress becomes too much to manage, it can be unhealthy.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone experiences stressful times, but can you tell when stress is becoming toxic?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think some key signs are when we\u2019re not able to do our important life activities, like if we\u2019re not able to remember our appointments or work, procrastinating on important things like paying our bills or buying groceries, or attending to our family matters,\u201d says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/biographies\/rush-beth-k-ph-d\/bio-20054473?mc_id=us&amp;utm_source=newsnetwork&amp;utm_medium=l&amp;utm_content=content&amp;utm_campaign=mayoclinic&amp;geo=national&amp;placementsite=enterprise&amp;cauid=100721\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Beth Rush<\/a>, a Mayo Clinic neuropsychologist.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When stress reaches a point where a person no longer can function in a meaningful way, it might be a sign of something more severe<\/strong>, says Dr. Rush.\u00a0<strong>And you should see a health care provider<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething serious may be going on, like anxiety or depression, which needs to be treated and evaluated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She says stress can be unpredictable, and it\u2019s important to take care of yourself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSleep, eat well, make sure you\u2019re exercising,\u201d says Dr. Rush. \u201cLook for signs of stress in yourself. Manage your emotions. Give yourself a timeout if you need to from activity or stimulation, or interaction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Managing stress<\/p>\n<p>One of the first steps toward good\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/stress-management\/basics\/stress-relief\/hlv-20049495?mc_id=us&amp;utm_source=newsnetwork&amp;utm_medium=l&amp;utm_content=content&amp;utm_campaign=mayoclinic&amp;geo=national&amp;placementsite=enterprise&amp;invsrc=other&amp;cauid=100721\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stress management<\/a>\u00a0is understanding how you react to stress\u2014and making changes if necessary. Take a look at how you react to stress, and then adopt or modify stress management techniques to make sure the stress in your life doesn\u2019t lead to health problems.<\/p>\n<p><em>Here are two ways to help manage stress that are beneficial and free:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/stress-management\/in-depth\/relaxation-technique\/art-20045368?mc_id=us&amp;utm_source=newsnetwork&amp;utm_medium=l&amp;utm_content=content&amp;utm_campaign=mayoclinic&amp;geo=national&amp;placementsite=enterprise&amp;invsrc=other&amp;cauid=100721\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Relaxation techniques<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0involve refocusing your attention on something calming and increasing awareness of your body. It doesn\u2019t matter which relaxation technique you choose. What matters is that you try to practice relaxation regularly to reap its benefits.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/tests-procedures\/meditation\/in-depth\/meditation\/art-20045858?mc_id=us&amp;utm_source=newsnetwork&amp;utm_medium=l&amp;utm_content=content&amp;utm_campaign=mayoclinic&amp;geo=national&amp;placementsite=enterprise&amp;invsrc=other&amp;cauid=100721\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Meditation<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>is considered a type of mind-body complementary medicine. Meditation has been practiced for thousands of years, and it originally was meant to help deepen understanding of the sacred and mystical forces of life.
