Sure, we all experience some form of stress in our daily lives, but chronic stress\u2014the kind that involves a\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.yalemedicine.org\/conditions\/stress-disorder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:consistent sense of feeling pressured and overwhelmed\" data-rapid_p=\"8\" data-v9y=\"1\">consistent sense of feeling pressured and overwhelmed<\/a>\u00a0over a long period\u2014can wreak havoc on your body and mind.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/stress.org\"><strong>The American Institute of Stress<\/strong><\/a>, every day an estimated\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.stress.org\/daily-life\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:one million people in the U.S.\" data-rapid_p=\"9\" data-v9y=\"1\">one million people in the U.S.<\/a>\u00a0miss work due to stress, and around 75 percent of Americans say chronic stress negatively impacts their physical and mental health.<\/p>\n<p>In a study published in\u00a0<em>SSM Population Health<\/em>\u00a0in September 2022, cancer researchers from the Medical College of Georgia found that chronic stress can make your risk of\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2352827322001641?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:fatal cancer\" data-rapid_p=\"10\" data-v9y=\"1\">fatal cancer<\/a>\u00a0soar. This database includes various biomarkers that indicate health status, including body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, cholesterol, hemoglobin A1C (a measure of diabetes risk), albumin and creatinine (measures of kidney function), and C-reactive protein (an inflammation marker). With this information, the researchers determined the participants&#8217; allostatic load, or &#8220;wear and tear&#8221; caused by chronic stress.<\/p>\n<p>Those assigned a score of 3 or higher were categorized as a high allostatic load. Then, the researchers compared this data to participants from the\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/ndi\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:National Death Index\" data-rapid_p=\"17\" data-v9y=\"1\">National Death Index<\/a>\u00a0to determine how many people died from cancer and when. For example, after controlling for age, those with a higher allostatic load had a 28 percent higher cancer death risk. Also, a 21 percent increase in the risk of dying from cancer was observed after adjusting for sex, race, and education level. Nearly everyone has been affected (directly or indirectly) by this devastating disease.
