In an acutely stressful situation, stress hormones enable the fight-or-flight response and help you deal with what your body perceives as an emergency.

Stress hormones should return to normal levels after the stressful situation is over, but prolonged or chronic stress can cause stress hormones to stay at higher levels than they should be. This can cause health concerns.

Stress management techniques include healthy lifestyle habits such as good-quality sleep, exercise, relaxation and mindfulness exercises, and connecting with others.

A Word From Verywell

Stress hormones are important to manage short-term stress, but if you find yourself feeling stressed or overwhelmed frequently, talk to your healthcare provider or a mental health professional. They can help you find ways to identify and manage your stress to prevent future health complications.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Does anxiety cause high cortisol?

Stress causes cortisol levels to rise. Anxiety can be a symptom of high cortisol.

What foods raise cortisol?

It may be helpful to limit or avoid:11

Added sugar and refined carbohydrates

Trans fats

Caffeine

Original post VERYWELL

By Heather Jones

Published on June 21, 2022

<span class="mntl-dynamic-tooltip--trigger" style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 0.3125rem; border: 0px; font-size: 14px; font-weight: 400; vertical-align: baseline; background: 0px 0px; position: relative; display: inline; color: #1a55ad !important; cursor: pointer;" data-tooltip="Verywell Health articles are reviewed by board-certified physicians and healthcare professionals.
