Y<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">et<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">determining what to change<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0to master stress<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">difficult<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">n effect,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0it\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">requires<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">making\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">an\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">objective judgment about oneself<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the cause of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">our\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">stress<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and what<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0to change<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0to make things better<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">P<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">eople are not objective<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0beings;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0we are highly subjective<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and often cannot decern what to change, let alone how<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:225,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The fact is, most of us know when we are stressed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. W<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">e might complain about how stressful our life is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0or<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0notice that our body, through aches and pains, is telegraphing that something is not right, or that we are sleeping poorly and wak<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0up feeling unrested.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">But<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0knowing\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">why our stress is occurring and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">what to change is not the same<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0as feeling and experiencing stress.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:225,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">When stress<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0our<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0behaviors, attitudes<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and inner thoughts change dramatically<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">S<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">tress warning signs vary\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">widely\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">from person to person<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">S<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ome\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">people\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">express stress outwardly through anger, irritation, impatience<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and hostility<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. In contrast,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">others turn inward and become self-critical with thoughts of disappointment, feeling burned-out<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0or being physically and emotionally tense.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">No one reacts\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">precisely\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the same\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">way\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">when confronted by life\u2019s stressors and problems.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">This make<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0identifying our stress warning signs all the more difficult.<\/span><span identify<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0stress warning signs is that we<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0are very adaptabl<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">an live<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">work under enormous\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">stress<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Because we<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0unconsciously<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">adapt<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">high\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">level<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0of stress<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">we<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0tune it out<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, ignore it<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and even accept it as part of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">our\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">life and work<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">P<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">sychologists<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0call<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">this<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">A<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">daptation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">-l<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">evel\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">P<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">rinciple<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">1<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">which means that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">people tend to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">adapt to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">high<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">er and higher<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">levels of stress until\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">that level\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">becomes the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">new normal<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Once\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">at<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0level is a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ccepted<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, then a new level is needed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">nother \u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">new normal\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ndividuals exhibiting\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">high degree of perfecti<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">onism<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">often\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">have\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">chronic health, physical and emotional problems.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Driven by the fear of failure,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">p<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">erfectio<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nists\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">need to ensure that no errors and mistakes are made; they are hard on themselves and often work<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0long hours to get the job done\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">correctly<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To conquer perfectionism, learn to recognize when\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">perfectionism\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">counter-productive<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and take steps to focus more on doing a good job rather than insisting on a perfect one<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. The\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Time-Urgency Scale\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">provides feedback on<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0the need to rush, move faster, work harder, and do more in less time. Generally, a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">time-<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">urgent person eats without really tasting the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ir\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">food, moves and walks rapidly<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">always\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">seems to be in a hurry<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">hey\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">tend to talk fast and hurry the speech of others<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">The inability to slow down is a hallmark of those individuals who believe that life is to be lived in the \u201cfast<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">lane<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u201d Unfortunately,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0these<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0hyperactive individuals adapt to high levels of action<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">generating<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0even more<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0stress.
